SMATCH is even more than just the smartest EV charging solution for business sites. Offering advanced functionality, such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and connection to power aggregators and distributors, SMATCH enables and catalyses the energy transition at your site and will allow you to actively participate in the energy markets of the future.
Versatile storage capacity and V2G
SMATCH supports bidirectional EV charging, involving charging or discharging the car battery depending on circumstances. This allows car batteries to be used as an incredibly versatile means of intermediate power storage, either to enhance smart charging and supply energy to the site (vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-building) or to provide services to the grid (V2G). Today, SMATCH is already capable of negotiating V2G transactions.
Providing services to the electrical grid
Electric cars whose charging is being managed by SMATCH will also be able to contribute to balancing the distribution and transmission grid, for instance by reducing charging when demand is high or by consuming electricity in oversupply conditions. More specifically, SMATCH can instruct chargers to charge or discharge connected EVs in response to grid operator or aggregator requests while taking into account all the relevant constraints. The vehicle fleet is then remunerated according to the level of balancing assistance being given to the grid. This service can be delivered at the level of a single customer, a company, an industrial zone or a wider area. While the market may not yet be sufficiently mature for V2G services, SMATCH already stands strong.
Taking it a step further
What’s more, ENGIE Laborelec can implement SMATCH as one component of a more comprehensive project to transform your local power grid into a smart microgrid, making the most of the local grid with its renewable power production assets and storage capability. Microgrids promise to bring ever greater benefits, including lower energy costs, reduced exposure to energy price fluctuations, reduced dependence on transmission grid services, a significantly lower carbon footprint, increased energy supply quality and reliability, and improved flexibility in the face of rapidly changing needs.
